Hello,

Please remember that we have early release on both Thursday and Friday this week. Grades are to be completed by Friday this week. Make sure to ask your child if they are missing any assignments from me.

Mrs. Hiles

Tonight the students are to complete the following performance task. They have been working on this assignment since Friday. They have known about this assignment since December 10th.

New South (SS8H7, SS8E2c) Performance Task

SS8H7 – Evaluate key political, social, and economic changes that occurred in Georgia during the New South Era.

SS8E2 – Evaluate the influence of Georgia-based businesses on the State’s economic growth and development.

Students will write a detailed letter to demonstrate understanding and mastery of the Unit.

Goal: Your goal is to analyze how power and privilege affect interdependence.

Role: You are a student living in Georgia during the early 1900’s.

Audience: You are writing a letter to your future self.

Situation: You have been growing up in the Atlanta area during the New South era, a time period of tremendous growth and development, but also Jim Crow and social unrest. You may have witnessed many of the people and events shaping Georgia during this time, including: the governance of the Bourbon Triumvirate; the newspaper writings of Henry Grady; the campaign speeches of Tom Watson and his Populist Party; visited the International Cotton Exposition and heard the speech from Booker T. Washington; witnessed the 1906 Atlanta Race Riot; read about the beliefs of W.E.B. Du Bois; visited the barber shop of Alonzo Herndon; or closely followed the court case of Plessy v. Ferguson or attended the trial of Leo Frank.

Product: Write a letter to your future self that includes:

A. Describing what life was like for you during this time period, making reference to at least three (3) of the above people or events and how they shaped your life.

B. Explain your position of power as it relates to these struggles (are you part of the power structure or not?).

C. Sharing your beliefs and guidance on the appropriate role and responsibility of those with power and those without power to shape change.

Students will have a common summative assessment on Thursday of this week that will cover the following standards: SS8H5, SS8H6, and SS8H7. Students have the notes for all of these standards. If they misplaced their notes they are to go to the Resource Tab on my blog and look under that standard. The PowerPoints that were used in class are also under the resource tab and standard number.

I hope you have a great night,

Mrs. Hiles
